The founder who needed to exist by Monday
A founder needed to exist by Monday, and I had to talk myself out of the beautiful version and into the useful one.
A founder messaged me on a Wednesday asking if I could make her exist by Monday. Not a full site, not the version with the case studies and the team page and the blog she hasn't written yet, just something real enough to send to a room of people who were going to Google her the second she left. I sat with that for a bit, because my first instinct is always the greedy one, the builder's one, where I start sketching the whole thing in my head and quietly fall in love with the ambitious version that would take six weeks and be beautiful and be, on Monday, entirely useless to her.
That gap is the whole problem I've been chewing on lately. There is the site I want to build, which is a proper structure with room to grow, and then there is the thing she actually needs, which is one honest page that loads fast and says the true thing about what she does. Those two are not the same object, and I keep having to talk myself down from confusing my ambition with her deadline. A big unfinished site is worse than a small finished one, because the half-built version broadcasts exactly the wrong signal to the exact person she's trying to convince, reading as someone who started and stalled, and a founder walking into a meeting cannot afford to look stalled.
So I've made peace with the mercy of the single page. One page, her real name, what she does in plain words, one way to reach her, and a load time so quick that nobody's attention wanders. There is no carousel of stock photos, no lorem ipsum hiding behind a placeholder, no navigation bar with four links that go nowhere. When someone searches for a quick landing page or a one page website they usually think they're asking for less, when honestly they're asking for the hardest thing, a page with no filler where every line has to earn its place, because there is nowhere to hide.
The part I find genuinely tender is watching what it does for the person. She's often not short of substance, she's short of a place to point people, and there's this small visible relief when she can finally send a link instead of a shrug. I think that relief is underrated in my line of work. Credibility on a Monday morning is not built from cleverness, it's built from looking like a real operation that a stranger can trust with money, and a clean page does that faster than a clever one ever could.
I'll build her the grand version later, if she wants it and once she's earned the runway to slow down for it. For now I keep reminding myself that shipping her into existence this week is the actual work in front of me, and the beautiful sprawling site I'm itching to make can wait for a founder who isn't currently standing outside a meeting room needing to look real.
